A seminar on Gender and COVID-19 responsive Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices and Alternative Livelihood Options was organized by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) at the Bua Yai Subdistrict Administration Office in Bua Yai Subdistrict, Na Noi District, Nan Province as part of a capacity-building event pertaining to the TA-9993.
The main objective of the seminar was to raise awareness of farming communities on adaptive agricultural practices and alternate livelihood options in highland areas. Importantly, the seminar serves as a process to create buy-in of the local communities and farmers to use CSA practices to aid climate change adaptation and enhance value-chain in the markets.
The other objectives of the seminar were:
- to share practical knowledge on the application and benefits of climate smart agriculture to improve crop productivity, resilient livelihoods and environmental conservation in highland areas;
- to share experiences and lessons learned which are important aspects for applications of sustainable farming management practices in highland areas;
- to identify the challenges and barriers to farming practices experienced from current practices; and
- to share knowledge and ideas on possible and practical smart farming models which enhance alternative livelihoods of the farming communities.
Participants included officers from the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE), ADB, farmers, local government officials, and representatives from the private sector.
Officials from AIT included Mr. Voravate Chonlasin, who is the Capacity Building and Knowlege Management Expert for the TA-9993.
